From the convenience of running anywhere to the joy of earning iconic Disney finisher medals, we’ll guide you through the ins and outs of participating in a virtual runDisney event. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a Disney fan looking to start, these virtual runs are a great way to join in the fun of runDisney.
Introduction to runDisney Virtual Races
By participating in a runDisney virtual race, runners (or walkers) can don their running shoes and set out on a course of their choosing on their own time. Their course could be a neighborhood sidewalk, a treadmill, or a scenic trail. The appeal of virtual racing lies in its flexibility, allowing participants to engage in the event at a time and place that suits their schedule. These races are also more affordable, both in race fees and travel expenses.
Virtual races also offer the benefit of avoiding the large crowds associated with a typical race weekend a the Walt Disney World Resorts or Disneyland. Runners can focus on running, so it’s a great introduction to runDisney and an awesome way to do your first runDisney event.
Understanding How runDisney Virtual Races Work
The process is simple, but as with regular runDisney events, a bit on the pricey side compared to other in-person or virtual race series. Participants register online for their chosen race just as they would for an in-person event, securing their spot on the runDisney.com website.
Once registered, runners receive a digital race packet with essential items to enhance their experience. Included are a downloadable bib to print and wear, and other digital goodies to bring the Disney magic to their run.
When race day arrives—or rather, the race window—runners choose their own course.
Upon completion, runners submit their time, relying on the honor system, to the runDisney platform.
Finally, participants get their finisher medal in the mail. The runDisney finisher medals are always unique to each race and feature a favorite Disney character. They will also receive a finisher certificate.
Virtual Race Weekends
The virtual runDisney race schedule typically follows the in-person race events schedule. For example, during the Disney Princess half marathon weekend live event they will also offer a virtual Disney Princess half marathon race series. The virtual Disney races for that weekend include the options of a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and what’s known as the fairytale challenge.
Participants can also register for longer virtual races like a half marathon or marathon distance, like in the example above. Just like the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend, there are multiple virtual races associated with the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend races and the Wine and Dine race.
RunDisney Summer Series
You can also choose one of runDisney’s virtual series available as a summer series. This virtual series can include separate 5k races with different themes and a challenge.
Participants who opt for the challenge register for a series of 5k runs, aiming to complete multiple 5ks over the summer season. Virtual runners will receive a medal for each virtual race they register for.
The Registration Process and Timeline
Registration for a virtual race is a straightforward online process, but they will occasionally sell out. This doesn’t happen nearly as quickly as it does for regular runDisney race events though, and by regular I mean “in-person races”.
Because a virtual race may sell out, runners should mark their calendars; registration typically opens approximately eight months before the race. Though this is a lot of prep time, it’s beneficial as it allows participants to plan their training schedules and prepare for the virtual run.
To register, you’ll navigate to the runDisney website, select the virtual race of your choice, and fill out the necessary information. Payment is processed at this stage, and you will get an email confirming your participation.
After registration, runners receive confirmation emails with details about the race packet and other pertinent information. This packet typically includes a customizable bib, themed digital experiences, and a preview of the finisher’s medal.
The Virtual Race Experience Pros and Cons
Participation in a runDisney virtual race is like setting a personal running goal but with a sprinkle of Disney pixie dust. It’s more fun than just running for the sake of running, but it’s not as exciting as running through a Disney theme park.
The starting line is wherever you choose, which is nice. It could be your driveway, the local park, or a treadmill facing a screen streaming Disney classics. Virtual races are a great idea for beginner runners, and those who don’t feel ready for the crowds, or the stress of traveling to a Disney park for their run. You also don’t have to be anywhere on a specific date, you can run at your own pace and your own schedule.
You can make virtual runs as immersive as you like. Some runners wear costumes or play Disney soundtracks, transforming an ordinary route into a stretch of Magic Kingdom or Epcot (well at least in your mind).
As you will see below, a runDisney virtual event is also significantly cheaper than in-person races, particularly when you factor in travel expenses. But, it’s not the same as regular runDisney races if you are a huge Disney theme park fan. It’s also not as motivating as you don’t have other runners or supporters to cheer you on.
Uploading Your Time: The Honor System in Action
Runners, upon finishing their chosen distance, visit the runDisney website to log their performance.
Keep in mind that the runDisney pacing requirements are different in virtual races versus in-person races. At in-person runDisney events like the Wine and Dine half marathon weekend or the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend, you must maintain a 16 minute mile.
However, for the virtual races, there is no set runDisney pacing requirement. No one is watching this, and times are self-reported. So, it’s great for trying to figure out your pace and determining if you can keep that 16 minute mile for an in-person race. But you don’t have the pressure of really keeping any kind of pace if you don’t feel ready for that.
The Cost of Participating in runDisney Virtual Races vs in-Person events
When considering the cost of participating in a runDisney virtual race, the financial commitment is notably less than other runDisney events, but it’s still pricey. For example, in the past year, the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon virtual race was priced at $127.92, a significant saving when compared to the $218.53 fee for the live event. Racing fees vary from $48 for the summer series 5ks and go all the way up to $325 for the more popular race weekend challenges!
The virtual option presents an economical alternative for Disney fans, and is a chance to experience a runDisney race in a more accessible format.
What’s Included in Your Virtual Race Package?
Every virtual runner receives a downloadable race bib. Your package also sometimes includes downloadable mile markers and start and finish line graphics. Depending on the race you may also get a race shirt.
And, of course, the pièce de résistance: the medal. After completing your race and uploading your time, a Disney-themed medal will be mailed to you at the end of the end of the event time frame. This finisher medal usually features beloved Disney characters and iconic designs. Many in the runDisney community collect and display these medals, which shows you how much better they are than a plain race medal.
Can Virtual Races Capture the Disney Magic?
The quintessence of Disney magic is an immersive experience that transports participants out of their everyday lives.
So, it’s a challenge, undoubtedly, for a virtual race to get the same sense of wonder that one feels when racing past Cinderella’s Castle or greeting your favorite characters along the race route. However, runDisney virtual races still can provide some of that Disney magic.
Unique ways you can capture the Disney magic on your race day
Runners can Disney bound (dress in their favorite characters’ or movie colors and themes) or in a full runDisney costume. This type of immersion is more fun when you run as a group, and the accessibility of a virtual runDisney race makes it easier for you to get a group of runners together. The downloadable race bibs and finish lines, coupled with personalized playlists of iconic Disney tunes, can help bring a slice of the park’s ambiance to your race. And, of course, there are those fancy finisher medals…have I mentioned those?
While virtual races will not fully replicate the all-encompassing Disney park experience, they are fun. Participating in a runDisney virtual race or virtual run series helps you with goal setting, and even training for an in-person race.
Tips and Tricks for a Successful Virtual runDisney Race
To conquer any type of runDisney race, the right strategy is as crucial as your running shoes. Start by setting a clear goal, whether it’s to set a new personal best or simply to cross the finish line. Then, create a training plan that gradually gets you to that goal.
Check out my runDisney training blogs and videos, and take a look at the runDisney website to view Jeff Galloway’s training plans. He’s a former Olympian and famous running coach, with a great method to gradually get you to that finish line.
Mapping your route beforehand can prevent mid-run surprises and help maintain your pace. Opt for a path that’s not only safe but also inspires joy—after all, this is a Disney race! On race day, keep your motivation up by crafting a playlist filled with your favorite Disney tunes or dressing in themed attire to channel that Disney park magic.
For an added touch of fun, you could simulate a race environment. Set up a starting line, maybe even a finish line tape, and have family or friends cheer you on. Remember to hydrate and fuel as you would during an actual race, ensuring your energy levels are sustained throughout your race.
You could also set up a post-run Disney-themed party. Serve Mickey waffles, Dole whip floats, or whatever fun Disney food you like. Maybe plan to see a Disney movie in the theaters or snuggle up on the couch and watch one of your favorites at home!
The Wrap Up
RunDisney virtual races offer a unique blend of Disney magic and the flexibility of virtual events. They are a great way to dip your toes into runDisney, or running or racing in general, without the large price tag of a Disney trip.
