Behind RunDisney: How to Be a Disney Marathon Volunteer
So let’s explore the magic of RunDisney events, the important role of Disney Marathon Volunteers, and all the details you need to know to get involved. Let’s dive into the world of Disney Marathons and discover how you can help make dreams come true as a Disney Marathon Volunteer.
Introduction to the Magic of RunDisney Events
At the Walt Disney World Resort, runners and volunteers alike come together to participate in the unforgettable experience of RunDisney. Let’s explore the popularity of Disney Marathons and what it truly means to be a part of the RunDisney community.
Exploring the Popularity of Disney Marathons
Disney Marathons have become immensely popular, attracting runners from all over the world. These events offer a blend of exciting race courses, fun Disney-themed entertainment, and the chance to run through the most magical places on earth – Disney theme parks!
One of the reasons behind the popularity of Disney Marathons is the opportunity to combine a love for running with a passion for Disney. During a runDisney event, the runner’s race journey includes getting the chance to meet Disney characters, experience stunning park scenery, and energy-boosting entertainment along the race route. It’s a truly magical way to compete in a marathon and create lasting memories at the same time.
Another factor contributing to the popularity is the variety of race options available. From the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend to the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend, to the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, there’s a race for every level of runner. And now, as of 2024, we can include Disneyland in that line-up again with the reintroduction of the Disneyland half-marathon weekend. All of these race weekends also feature 5K and 10K races. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a beginner, there’s an event just for you.
What It Means to Be Part of the RunDisney Community
Being part of the RunDisney community extends beyond simply running the races. It’s about being part of a supportive and passionate group of individuals who share the same love for Disney and running. The camaraderie and sense of belonging among participants and volunteers create an atmosphere unlike any other running event.
The RunDisney community welcomes runners of all ages and abilities, encouraging and inspiring one another throughout the race.
In addition to the camaraderie, the RunDisney community also offers unique perks and experiences for Disney fans. From exclusive character meet and greets to special race weekend events, participants and volunteers can have special experiences beyond the race course.
The Vital Role of the Disney Marathon Volunteer
Disney Marathon Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring the success and smooth operation of the RunDisney events. Their commitment and dedication contribute to creating a memorable and magical race experience for all participants.
As a Disney Marathon Volunteer, you will be assigned various responsibilities and tasks that are essential to the event’s overall coordination. These may include:
- Assisting at aid stations – providing hydration and support to runners along the race course.
- Distributing race packets – ensuring that participants receive their bibs, shirts, and other necessary items.
- Guiding and directing participants – helping them navigate the race course and providing crucial information.
- Cheering and motivating runners – offering encouragement and support to keep their spirits high.
- Managing crowd control – ensuring the safety and smooth flow of participants and spectators.
The role of a Disney Marathon Volunteer goes beyond logistical support. Volunteers have a lasting impact on the race experience for participants. From the moment runners step foot on the course until they cross the finish line, volunteers contribute to the overall atmosphere of positive energy and encouragement. Their enthusiasm and dedication create a supportive environment that is much needed as these events can be quite challenging for the runners, as well as for those organizing the events.
By embodying the Disney spirit and upholding the high standard of excellence that Disney is known for, volunteers truly bring the magic to the RunDisney events. Their selfless contribution plays a crucial role in making each race a memorable experience for RunDisney participants.
Getting Involved: RunDisney Volunteer Opportunities
Whether you are a Disney fan, a fitness enthusiast, or simply want to contribute to a worthy cause/featured charity, there are various volunteer opportunities available to suit your interests and availability.
Finding Your Fit: Various Volunteer Roles
When it comes to volunteering for RunDisney events, there are a variety of roles to choose from. Some of the volunteer positions include:
- Aid Station Volunteer: Assist in providing water at water stops, sports drinks, and energy gels/packs to runners along the race course.
- Race Packet Pick-Up Volunteer: Help distribute race bibs, t-shirts, and other participant materials during the race expo.
- Medal Distribution Volunteer: Congratulate and distribute medals to runners as they cross the finish line.
- Course Marshal: Ensure the safety of participants by directing them along the race route and controlling traffic.
- Entertainment Volunteer: Engage with spectators and runners, offering encouragement and creating a fun atmosphere. There are cheer squads that help provide support along the way.
These are just a few examples of the volunteer roles available. Depending on the specific event and its needs, additional roles may be offered. The bigger the race the more volunteers are needed.
Benefits of being a Disney Marathon Volunteer (or other runDisney event volunteer)
The benefits of being a runDisney volunteer have changed over the last year. In late 2023, runDisney announced that complimentary tickets to the Disney parks would not be part of the benefits for race volunteers. Before 2022, some runDisney volunteer slots (particularly for the long marathon volunteer days) would receive a full-day ticket to the Disney parks in exchange for their time.
Then in 2023, without notice, Disney gave out a half-day ticket to runDisney volunteers. Now, for the upcoming runDisney race season, the volunteer opportunity position perks aren’t listed, and it is expected there will no longer be complimentary theme park tickets.
The spirit of volunteerism, however, is not about perks.
RunDisney is a profit race, so let’s not let that go unsaid. However, they do support a featured charity with every race. These charities have included the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Starlight Foundation for Children, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and more. Your contribution as a Disney marathon volunteer or runDisney event volunteer can help support these vital charities and the communities they serve.
Though it’s not listed anywhere as a definitive benefit, runDisney will provide a t-shirt and sometimes a nice jacket, depending on the weather. If you are on the course as a volunteer during the WDW marathon weekend, it’s a long day so they will provide you with food and water also. Typically there is also free parking for volunteers.
Understanding Volunteer Requirements and Time Commitments
Before signing up to be a RunDisney volunteer, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the requirements and time commitments involved. While specific requirements may vary depending on the event, some general guidelines are as follows:
- Minimum Age: Volunteers typically need to be at least 16 years old, although exceptions may exist for certain roles.
- Time Commitments: Most volunteer shifts range from 4-6 hours, and some events may require multiple shifts over a span of 1-2 days.
- Dependability: Volunteers are expected to arrive at their assigned location on time and fulfill their responsibilities. If you don’t show up that puts a strain on the other volunteers and could result in not having enough to distribute water, for example, making it much more difficult for the runners.
