Planning your dream Disney vacation but torn between the West Coast charm of Disneyland and the East Coast magic of Walt Disney World? Learn what rides are the same at Disneyland and Disney World in our guide!
What Rides are the Same at Disneyland and Disney World
This is one of the top questions we get from fellow Disney lovers. Both parks offer unforgettable experiences and incredible theming, but they’re surprisingly different in size, atmosphere, and strategy.
At Pixie Packing Travel Co., we’ve explored both from Main Street to the last nighttime fireworks spectacular — so let’s break it all down to help you choose your perfect Disney adventure!
🌟 Overview: Two Magical Worlds, One Big Decision
These two Disney resorts are very different despite the attractions they have in common. Let’s look at some of their key facts and differences:
✨ Disneyland (California)
-
Opened: 1955 (Walt Disney’s original dream and the park he originally built and managed regularly)
-
Location: Anaheim, California
-
Parks: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure
-
Vibe: Walkable, nostalgic, charming — and yes, you can walk from your hotel to the park gates!
✨ Walt Disney World (Florida)
-
Opened: 1971
-
Location: Orlando, Florida
-
Parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom
-
Vibe: Epic, immersive, and a full vacation destination — you’ll want multiple days to experience it all!
🎒 Pixie Packing Tip:
For Disneyland, a lightweight park bag or sling bag works great since everything’s nearby, especially if you stay onsite at one of the Disneyland resort hotels or in a hotel near the gates. At WDW, consider a backpack with room for water bottles, cooling towels, rain and sun protection, and a portable charger — you’ll be covering more ground. Check out this blog to learn how to pack the perfect park bag!
🏰 A Bit of Disney History
Walt Disney personally oversaw the creation of Disneyland, and you can feel that personal touch throughout the park. Many original rides are still running today! Disneyland’s Fantasyland is truly a step back into the nostalgic past of the original Disney animated movies and dark rides that feature their characters.
Walt Disney World, on the other hand, was a passion project completed after Walt’s passing. His brother Roy made sure his vision came to life — on a much grander scale based on Walt’s purchasing of over 27,000 acres. That explains the larger footprint and resort-style design.
🎢 Attractions You’ll Find in BOTH Parks
Some classic rides are so iconic, you’ll find versions in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Here are a few fan favorites:
-
Space Mountain
-
Pirates of the Caribbean
-
Haunted Mansion
-
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
-
It’s a Small World
-
Peter Pan’s Flight
-
Star Tours
-
Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters (or Space Ranger Spin)
-
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
- Rise of the Resistance
🎉 New to both: Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is replacing Splash Mountain at both resorts — perfect for Princess and the Frog fans!
You will find that, although these rides are essentially the same in terms of theming and name, they can vary from park to park. The Star Wars-themed rides don’t vary, but read on to learn more about the differences!
🔍 Same Rides, Different Vibes
Not all rides are created equal — even when they share a name. Here’s how some rides differ coast to coast:
-
Pirates of the Caribbean is longer and more detailed in Disneyland (two drops and a view of the lovely Blue Bayou restaurant!).
-
Space Mountain at Disneyland has side-by-side seating and an onboard soundtrack. WDW’s is single-file with a different track.
-
It’s a Small World in California features a charming outdoor facade, while the Florida version is entirely indoors. The California version also features Disney characters sprinkled throughout the different scenes, making it fun for kids and adults alike to spot their favorites!
-
Haunted Mansion: both coasts have planned updates, with California’s version just completed. Check out the details below:
🏰 Disneyland (Anaheim, CA)
Major Updates:
-
New Bride Scene: The attic scene now features a reimagined bride character, replacing the previous version known as Constance Hatchaway. This change aims to present a less violent backstory, focusing on themes of heartbreak rather than depicting the bride as an axe-wielding maniac.
-
Enhanced Hitchhiking Ghosts: The iconic hitchhiking ghosts at the end of the ride have been updated with advanced digital effects are now even cooler than before!
-
Queue and Retail/gift shop Expansion: An expanded outdoor queue area is part of the refurbishment, featuring new thematic elements. Additionally, a new gift shop named Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond has opened at the ride’s exit, offering even more Haunted Mansion merch (there was already a Haunted Mansion gift shop so this is a second).
-
Seasonal Overlay: The Haunted Mansion Holiday, themed after The Nightmare Before Christmas, is scheduled to return from August 22, 2025, through January 7, 2026, but as far as we know, nothing has changed in this overlay.
🎢 Walt Disney World (Orlando, FL)
Planned Updates:
-
Refurbishment Permit Filed: Disney Imagineering has filed a permit for general construction at the Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion, with a projected completion date of October 31, 2025. While specific details are limited, the involvement of a theming contractor suggests potential updates to certain scenes.
-
Potential Scene Modifications: Following updates at Disneyland, Disney is considering changes to certain scenes in the Magic Kingdom version, including the possible removal of the hanging corpse in the stretching room, to address cultural sensitivities.
-
🎠 Pixie Plans Fun Fact:
Both WDW and Disneyland’s queue areas are often part of the attraction experience, but even more so at Walt Disney World. Think interactive games, themed rooms, and air-conditioned waiting areas — especially helpful during Florida’s hot summers!

✨ Exclusive Attractions You’ll Only Find at One Resort
Now let’s explore unique attractions on each coast.
🌉 Disneyland Exclusives:
-
Indiana Jones Adventure – a thrilling ride you won’t find at WDW (however, Dinosaur has the same ride vehicle tech and is being replaced by an Indiana Jones-inspired attraction, more on this when we get more details).
-
Matterhorn Bobsleds – unique to California and a classic coaster on which it’s rumored Walt Disney was the first passenger!
-
Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln- this attraction grew out of Walt Disney’s love for Abraham Lincoln and our country’s history. It was featured at the World’s Fair and was a marvel, as the public had never seen an animatronic before. The version that was instead debuted at Walt Disney World is based on the history of all American Presidents.
-
Disneyland Monorail (you board it inside the park so it’s actually considered an attraction).
- Disneyland Resort Hotels: Proximity to the Parks- The Disneyland Resort is home to three onsite hotels, all within walking distance of the parks. The Grand Californian even has its own entrance to Disney’s California Adventure park!

🎬 Walt Disney World Exclusives:
-
Expedition Everest (Animal Kingdom)- an exciting journey to the Forbidden Mountain. An incredible coaster with amazing theming!
-
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom)- a family coaster with super fun scenes featuring the Seven Dwarfs and built on the land where Snow White’s Scary Adventures originally was (this dark ride still exists in Disneyland, though it has been made less scary)
-
TRON Lightcycle / Run (Magic Kingdom)- One of the newest thrill rides in the Magic Kingdom and WDW in general. It’s really cool and very fun, but very short. This ride is not unique to the Magic Kingdom though as the first TRON coaster can be found in Shanghai Disneyland.
-
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (EPCOT)- my favorite attraction at any park- ever! This ride combines incredible music, the hilarity of the Guardians of the Galaxy crew, all while combining a reverse launch with an Omnicoaster ride system. In my opinion it’s pure genius.
-
More resort dining & hotel themes — from Polynesian bungalows to Campsites to Deluxe Grande Villas, Walt Disney World is home to over 25 resort hotels!

🧭 Ease of Getting Around
🏃♀️ Disneyland: Park Hopper Heaven
You can literally walk across the plaza to hop from Disneyland to California Adventure in under 5 minutes. This makes park hopping super efficient — and ideal for short trips, and usually worth the splurge if it’s in your budget.
🚌 WDW: Bring Your Walking Shoes (and a Map!)
Walt Disney World is enormous, and transportation between parks often requires buses, boats, or the monorail. It’s more of a full-scale resort experience — great if you’re planning a longer vacation.
🧳 Packing and Planning Tip:
Plan for downtime. WDW trips are more exhausting, so pack blister care, electrolyte packets, and cooling fans and try to plan in a park-free resort day to reset and re-energize!
💡 Final Thoughts: Which One Should You Choose?
If, after reading this, you are trying to decide between the East Coast and the West Coast Disney parks, let’s help you out. Here’s a quick table that may help you decide:
Preference | Pick This Park |
---|---|
✨ Shorter trip, easy park hopping | Disneyland |
✨ First-timer wanting big, immersive experience | Walt Disney World |
✨ Fewer travel days, tighter budget | Disneyland |
✨ Want variety and all-out resort hotel and more dining options | Walt Disney World |
✨ California charm/proximity and nostalgic feels | Disneyland |
✨ Thrill rides + EPCOT food festivals | Walt Disney World |
🏰 Pixie Pick:
I love both parks for different reasons — but if you’re traveling with little ones, Disneyland’s simplicity and classic Fantasyland charm is a win. If you’re ready to dive into all things Disney and have a few extra days, WDW is an unforgettable experience.
