If you have booked a stay at Disney’s classic Fort Wilderness resort, you may be wondering- How do I get from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom? Check out this ultimate Fort Wilderness Transportation guide to find answers to all of your Fort Wilderness navigation questions!
Fort Wilderness Transportation Guide: Magic Kingdom & Beyond
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is a gem of a resort. It is an original O.G. Walt Disney World resort that provided an affordable place to stay (and still does) on Disney World property during its opening year of 1971. There are two complimentary ways to get to Magic Kingdom Park from Fort Wilderness. My favorite way is by boat, but you can also take a free Disney bus.
Keep in mind that this is a vast resort- let’s look at how to get around both inside the resort and to different parts of Disney World.
Getting Around Fort Wilderness: Internal Transportation Options
Fort Wilderness Campground, sprawling over 700 acres, presents numerous ways to move around. An internal bus service and golf cart rentals make travel within this huge resort much easier.
Internal Bus System
Fort Wilderness has a well-designed Internal Bus System with 12 stops, serving guests from approximately 6:30 a.m. to late night, usually way past midnight. These late night buses can get quite crowded, just FYI.
The buses cover most areas of the campground and run at 15-20 minutes intervals. This service ensures easy access to various locations, with the exception of the Meadows pool for the purple line. The yellow and orange lines do go there, as well as to the campfire, bike barn, arcade, Meadows trading post, and canoe rental.
Golf Carts
Alternatively, for a personalized experience, many guests choose Golf Cart Rentals. A daily rental from Disney’s facility costs $65- $84. Carts are available for pickup at 1:00 PM and must be returned by 11:00 AM on the return date.
As of June 1st, 2024, no third-party golf cart companies are allowed to rent carts for operation on Fort Wilderness or Walt Disney World property, which represents a huge change. You can, however, still bring your personal golf cart but you must provide proof of insurance and sign an agreement and waiver.
Golf carts are such a fun way to get around your internal loop and the entire Fort Wilderness resort!
Other Modes of Internal Transport
Beyond buses and golf carts, Fort Wilderness offers additional fun ways to roam. The Bike Barn features bike rentals at $11 per hour or up to $20 a day, running from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Activity/rental fees may be paid via MagicBand, credit card, Disney gift card, or Disney Resort key card. You don’t need to be a Fort Wilderness resort or Disney resort guest to do recreational or Bike Barn activities.
Other recreational activities at Fort Wilderness
- Horseback riding is an awesome way to see the Fort Wilderness resort and an awesome resort day activity. It’s available for guests over age 9, at least 48 inches tall, and under 250 pounds. Trail rides are roughly 45 minutes long and cost $65 per person plus tax. I highly recommend making reservations for horseback riding at Fort Wilderness as it can fill up quickly.
- Pony rides are available at Tri-Circle-D Ranch for $10 plus tax per child. Riders must be 3-9 years old, under 80 pounds, and no taller than 48 inches.
- Fort Wilderness also offers canoe and kayak rentals for $15 per person and are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bike Barn.
- If you choose archery (I can’t help but throw a Brave reference in here), Fort Wilderness has this, too! It’s available for $49 per person at 11:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Guests must be 7 years old, and this experience lasts 75 minutes.
Fort Wilderness to Magic Kingdom
To get from Fort Wilderness Campground to the Magic Kingdom Resort area and park, you can take two forms of complimentary transportation- the beautiful Boat Service or the standard Disney World bus service (can you tell which I think is the best way to get there?).
Boat Ride
The Boat Service to Magic Kingdom is a lovely way to get there. It runs from Fort Wilderness 30 minutes before the park opens, until about 1.5 hours after it closes. Boats come often, every 10-15 minutes, and the trip takes roughly 13 minutes.
This water transportation service is also connected to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. If you want to take a lovely mile walk from Fort Wilderness to the lodge, you’ll have an 8-minute boat ride to Magic Kingdom.
Bus Service
Complimentary bus transportation makes travel straightforward from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom. Buses are available from the Outpost Depot, which you can get to by walking, taking the internal Fort Wilderness bus, riding a bike, or taking your golf cart. Buses (vs driving your car) save you from parking hassles at the TTC by dropping you near the park entrance.
Disney buses run often, and TVs announce the arrival time of the next bus at each bus stop. You can also track Disney bus arrival times on the My Disney Experience app.
Minnie Van
Taking a Disney Minnie Van is my favorite way to get to Magic Kingdom when I’m in a hurry. These polka dot SUVs (not really vans) are the most direct way to get to the Magic Kingdom as they can literally pick you up at your campsite or any of the Fort Wilderness cabins (and the new cabins are amazing) and take you straight to the entrance area for Magic Kingdom. Check out my Minnie Van blog here for more info on Minnie Vans.
Reaching Other Disney Theme Parks from Fort Wilderness
You can also get from Fort Wilderness to the other Disney theme parks and Disney Springs (the dining and shopping district). Let’s look at how to get around the Walt Disney World Property from Fort Wilderness.
Theme Parks
You can take the bus services to Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot. Another option, if you are headed to Epcot, is to hop on the water taxi (boat service mentioned above) and head to the Magic Kingdom, then catch the Monorail from Magic Kingdom to Epcot.
Water Parks
To head to the water parks (Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon), jump on a bus from Outpost Depot (that’s where you catch all of the Disney parks buses).
Disney Springs and Disney Resorts
Disney Springs and the many Disney Resorts can be reached from Fort Wilderness also via bus transportation. For the Disney resorts, it’s less direct, but you can take a bus from Fort Wilderness Outpost Depot directly to Disney Springs, then take a bus from Disney Springs to any of the Disney resorts (though keep in mind this will take a lot of time).
The Wrap Up
Staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground means diving deep into Disney’s O.G. magic. It spans 700 acres with 799 campsites and 409 cabins, so knowing how to navigate this resort is essential!
Renting an electric golf cart at Fort Wilderness makes exploring even more fun, along with the variety of unique recreation activities they offer. Fun activities like archery, canoe, kayak, and bike rentals, and the Chip and Dale’s campfire singalong make Fort Wilderness a favorite among many Disney fans.
Fort Wilderness Campground is one of my favorite places on Disney property, and I have always had a great time visiting and staying there, and I hope you love it too!
