Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters: The Ultimate Guide
Welcome to Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters secrets! In this section, we will explore the ride mechanics and laser blasters of this Disneyland attraction. This attraction can also be found at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort but it’s slightly different there and is called Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. So, these tips won’t apply at the Space Rangers spin ride there.
Let’s explore this interactive dark-ride shooting game where riders use laser blasters to target and earn points.
Ride Mechanics and Laser Blasters Explained
Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters is a family-friendly dark ride experience that takes place in space, with Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. You will join Buzz in his fight against the evil Emperor Zurg. Each ride vehicle is equipped with a laser blaster ready to be wielded by a Galactic Hero like you!
“Become a part of the action-packed world of Buzz Lightyear and help defeat the evil Emperor Zurg. Your mission is to use your laser blaster to shoot at various targets throughout the ride.”
If this is your first time riding this attraction be sure to pay attention to the first few sections. We will then move on to more advanced strategies towards the end of the post.
To control your blaster, simply grab the joystick located on the dashboard of your ride vehicle. This joystick allows you to spin your ride vehicle in any direction, allowing you to aim at different targets. Aim at the numerous interactive targets along the journey and fire away to earn points.
The laser blasters are equipped with sensors that detect when you hit a target. Each successful hit will earn you points. Keep in mind that some targets are worth more points than others, so choose your shots wisely to maximize your score.
Now that you understand the ride mechanics and mastery of the laser blasters, you’re ready to start your quest to become a Galactic Hero.
Maximizing Your Ride Score: Know the Target Values
To maximize your score on the Buzz Lightyear ride, it’s important to understand the target values. Each target shape carries a different point value, so knowing the worth of each shape will help you strategize and aim for the highest-scoring targets. There are a variety of these targets located throughout the ride.
1. Deciphering the Difference Between Circle, Square, Diamond, and Triangle Targets
Circle Target: 100 points. These targets are worth the fewest points, but they are abundant throughout the ride. While they contribute to your score, it’s important not to solely focus on them as there are higher value targets to aim for.
Square Target: 1000 points. Square targets offer a moderate point value and can be found in various scenes of the ride. Hitting these targets will noticeably increase your score, but there are still more valuable targets to pursue.
Diamond Target: 5000 points. Diamond targets hold a higher point value than circle and square targets. Aim for these whenever possible to boost your score significantly. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden diamond targets that can be found in unexpected places.
Triangle Target: 10,000 points. Triangle targets are the most valuable and should be your primary focus when trying to maximize your score. They are typically more difficult to hit but offer the highest point value. Look for hidden triangle targets throughout the ride for even greater scoring opportunities.

2. The Importance of Lit Targets and How to Spot Them
One key aspect to consider when aiming for high scores is the status of the targets. Lit targets, which are illuminated, are worth more points than their unlit counterparts. You should try to hit as many lit targets as possible to maximize your score during the ride.
Spotting lit targets can be challenging. But with the right techniques, you can improve your chances of identifying and hitting lit targets. Here are a few tips:
- Pay attention to the glow: Lit targets emit a subtle glow. Look for this faint illumination to spot the lit targets.
- Notice the blinking: Some lit targets may blink intermittently, they are worth more points when they do this. Keep an eye out for targets that flash or blink.
- Listen for audio cues: In certain scenes, audio cues may accompany the appearance of lit targets. Stay tuned to any sounds or voiceovers that can show you there are lit targets.
- Observe patterns: After riding the Buzz Lightyear attraction multiple times, you may start to notice patterns in the appearance of lit targets. You will learn more about these patterns the more you ride, so keep track of the patterns.
By knowing the importance of lit targets and implementing these spotting techniques, you can increase your chances of hitting high-value targets and maximizing your ride score.
3. Making the Most of Your Ride Vehicle
When it comes to achieving a high score on the Buzz Lightyear ride, making the most of your ride vehicle is also very important.
Here are some tips and strategies to help you maximize your score:
Ride Alone: If possible, try to ride alone in your vehicle. This gives you full control and allows you to focus solely on your own targets, without any distractions from other riders.
Choose Your Gun: Before the ride starts, test the accuracy of your blaster by firing a few shots. If you find that your blaster is shooting more to the left or right, choose a different gun that aligns better with your aiming style. This will help you hit targets more accurately and maximize your score.
Switch to the Second Gun: This applies if you are riding alone. During the ride, keep an eye out for the moment when the ride vehicle turns around. This is the perfect time to switch to the second gun, as it often has a higher accuracy. Mastering the transition between guns can significantly boost your score.
Ride on the Left Side: When choosing your seat in the ride vehicle, opt for the left side if possible. This side tends to have better scoring opportunities, as many of the high-value targets are positioned more favorably for left-side riders. By riding on the left, you’ll have a better chance of maximizing your score. We’ll talk more about this later!
4. Keep shooting, no matter what
This may sound basic but it’s important. Keep shooting the entire time, no matter what, even if the ride stops. And this ride does stop frequently so take advantage of all of the shooting you can do during these stops! So, log onto a target and hit it over and over again, even if it goes dark it will light up again and you can keep scoring points.
5. Work on your accuracy
Try to line up the end of your blaster laser beam with the hole in the center of the target to improve your accuracy and score. The closer you get to the center of the target each time, the higher the score you will get.
6. Discover the Hidden Targets for a Higher Score
Unlocking the secrets to a higher score on the Buzz Lightyear ride at Disneyland involves more than just hitting the obvious targets. There are hidden targets throughout the ride that can significantly boost your score and help you become a Galactic Hero. Keep an eye out for these elusive targets and aim for them to earn extra points. Remember the highest scoring targets to look for are the Triangle, followed by the Diamonds- the squares and circles won’t earn you much but they will get you some points. On the attraction, circles are in the front and diamonds and triangles are in the back- keep that in mind!
These hidden targets are often overlooked by riders who are focusing on the main targets, but they can make all the difference in achieving a higher score. See my room-by-room guide below to learn more about these!
Advanced Strategies for Buzz Lightyear Ride Veterans
For experienced riders looking to take their Buzz Lightyear ride scores to the next level, here are some advanced strategies to consider:
7. Tips for Consistently Hitting Moving Targets
- Predict Their Path: Anticipate the movement of moving targets by observing their patterns. Take note of their direction and speed to increase your chances of hitting them.
- Timing Is Key: Learn the timing of moving targets and coordinate your shots accordingly. Lit up targets are worth more points so try to time shots to when the targets are lit up.
- Focus on Precision: Aim for the center of moving targets to maximize your score. The more precise your shots, the higher the points you’ll earn.
8. Secrets for Scoring Big in Every Room
In general, you are shooting for Zurg, Triangles, or Diamonds. So now let’s dive further into each room’s secrets, but don’t forget to check out the Tunnel Secrets in the next point:
Very First Room
- In the first room, there is a battery with a diamond on it, if you just keep hitting this one you can score 6 digits!
- Next you can look past this battery and you will see a diamond on the wall so aim at that.
- In the first room there’s also a diamond on the back of the orange robot’s hand so aim at that after you go around the bend.
Second Room
In the second room you will encounter Zurg so he should be your focus!
- Shoot the green square at the bottom of his gun. This will make him turn toward you, but you must shoot it many times.
- Line up your laser pointer with Zurg’s chest and aim just between the breastplates on his chest, just below the Z logo. This point is very hard to see but it’s there so keep shooting and re-aim if you need to.
- After this there are mostly just green squares to shoot at so try to rack those up if you can.
Alien Volcano Room
This is the room with the rotating Aliens and there are some hidden targets here too!
- The aliens are rotating and have diamonds on them so try to hit them when you can.
- There is a triangle on the other side of the alien so hit that if you can
- After the rotating aliens there is a jack-in-the-box alien that is on your left. Shoot the green square and that will open up a purple diamond under the lid!
- Next you will see a yellow-orange alien, shoot the green square and that will open up a purple diamond
- Zurg- he’s flying in this room on the spaceship and there’s a triangle to the right of his shoulder so try to hit that. That’s the most important!
- After the Alien room and before the last room there is a tunnel so see the point #9 for tunnel secrets
Last Room
In the final room, you will see Zurg again, but there is also a triangle next to him. There are also diamonds on the wall.
Don’t forget to pose for your picture- just look at the square target above the alien next to Zurg. When you see the flash your picture is being taken.
After you pass the picture spot, you will see a jack-in-the-box Alien holding a battery, turn your cart to try and hit him. You will earn lots of points from this hidden target!
9. Short Tunnel
When you go through the tunnel try to go backward and aim for the back wall until the ride starts taking control of your vehicle. After that go crazy on the diamonds on the walls.
By implementing these advanced strategies, experienced riders can enhance their performance on the Buzz Lightyear ride, consistently hitting moving targets and scoring big in every room.
10. Navigating the Buzz Lightyear Ride: Left Side Advantage
When it comes to achieving high scores on the Buzz Lightyear ride, riders need to take advantage of every opportunity. One of the key advantages that can significantly impact your score is riding on the left side of the attraction.
Why Ride Position Matters for Scoring High
The placement of targets and the ride mechanics make the left side of the Buzz Lightyear ride particularly advantageous for scoring high. On the left side, you’ll find targets that are easier to hit and have higher point values, giving you the best chance to rack up those galactic points.
11. Solo riders have an advantage
For solo riders, the left side advantage becomes even more valuable, as you have full control over the ride vehicle. You can also choose different blasters if needed.
By taking full advantage of the left side advantage and leveraging your control as a solo rider, you’ll have a better chance of becoming a Galactic Hero on the Buzz Lightyear ride.
12. Recognizing and Aiming for High-Value Targets
Elevate your Buzz Lightyear ride experience by mastering the art of recognizing and aiming for high-value targets.
So, in case the above guide was a bit confusing let’s talk high-value targets in summary in this section:
One of the most crucial high-value targets to aim for is Emperor Zurg’s chest, which holds the highest point value in the entire attraction. To hit this hidden gem, carefully aim your laser blaster at the center of Zurg’s chest, right below the Z logo and between the breastplates. A well-placed shot here guarantees a significant point boost and improves your chances of reaching the coveted Galactic Hero status.
In addition to Zurg’s chest, keep an eye out for other high-value targets sprinkled throughout the ride. These targets may not be as prominently displayed as Zurg’s chest, but they still pack a punch when it comes to scoring big. Remember to look for targets with higher point values marked by triangles, diamonds, and illuminating lights. When a target blinks and lights up that’s worth even more points!
So, gear up, aim true, and embark on a thrilling quest to become a Galactic Hero.
13. Riding this attraction with young children
It’s not all about winning right? Well, maybe in my family it is but when the kids were little it wasn’t. Little ones and younger kids are going to want to ride this ride and take part in the action. Luckily this attraction has pity points and that can really boost kids (and adults alike) confidence! For every 5 missed points you will get 100 pity points. So, again, keep firing the entire ride, even if you or your kiddos are missing, you will still get points.
